What do you do to keep fit?

I think it is important to get enough sleep.  Every night, I go to bed early.  I sleep about seven hours a night.  I also eat fruits and vegetables every day.  I never drink soda and I never eat candy or junk food.

Exercise is a great way to keep fit.  I do yoga every morning and I always do fifty push ups.  I live on a mountain, so I sometimes go hiking after I get home from work.  I sometimes play tennis with my neighbor at the tennis courts near my apartment.

Syllabus

English Conversation 1
2014, Spring Semester
Jason Rea
GEC Faculty Office 314

This class will cover contractions, simple present tense, present continuous tense, simple past tense, and am/is/are + going to + VERB (one of the future tenses.)

Vocabulary related to food, travel, clothing, places around town, transportation, exercise, and student life will be the main lexical focus.

We will also examine how to read numbers.

The main academic goal of the class will be to improve fluency.  It is important that students participate actively during speaking activities.

Vocabulary plays an important role in fluency; students are expected to take note of new vocabulary – keeping a notebook is a good way to do this.

The material and subject matter of our class shall meet KoreaTech guidelines for English Conversation 1.

Attendance

Attend all classes.  More than 4 absences will result in Failure of the course, as per GEC Guidelines.  If you are late to class 4 times = 1 absence.  If you miss a class, please come to my office as soon as you can.  If you miss a test, you must talk with me to determine if you can take the test at another time.

Mid-Term and Final Exams

Both exams will follow the same format.  There will be a short series of multiple choice questions and a speaking test.  The multiple choice questions will account for 33% of the score.  The speaking test will account for 66% of the score.

Class Participation

The main focus of our class will be speaking and listening.  It is important, therefore, that students be active participants in the class.  Students who do not talk enough during classroom speaking activities will receive a lower Class Participation grade than students who talk more.  Put some effort into the class.  Do your best.

Grades

According to GEC guidelines, no more than 75% of the class can receive As and Bs.  Each semester, hard-working students are shocked when they receive a C.  Please do your best at all times.

35% of students can receive A
75% of students can receive A or B

Grades will be calculated on the following:

40%  Mid-Term Exam
40%  Final Exam
20%  Homework, Attendance, Participation

Homework and Test Preparation

There will be a number of homework assignments.  The homework assignments are designed to help students acquire the target language.  This includes grammatical form and vocabulary.  Doing the homework and reviewing before the test is an excellent way to prepare.  Questions for the Speaking test will be given to the students beforehand, so it is advised that students practice their answers before the test.
